The Sierra Desert Gun Club (SDGC) is a California nonprofit corporation affiliated with the National Rifle Association, California Rifle and Pistol Association and the Civilian Marksmanship Program of the United States Army. The club has been conducting rifle and pistol marksmanship training and matches in the Indian Wells Valley for over forty years. The club was formed by the merger of the Ridgecrest Gun Club (formed in 1954) and the China Lake Rifle and Pistol Club (formed in 1945) in 1963.
The SDGC shooting range is located on a portion of the Ridgecrest Gun Range Association facility on Brown Road approximately six miles south of Inyokern. The range was constructed by club members aided by financial support from the NRA Foundation in the form of grants. See Map.
The range has a covered firing line that is 180 feet long. Ten firing points are used for NRA style bullseye target shooting at ranges of 50 feet, 25 yards, 50 yards and 100 yards. The rest of the firing line is used for .22 Rimfire metallic silhouette shooting. The small steel silhouette targets are: chickens at 40 meters, javalina at 60 meters, turkeys at 77 meters and big horn sheep at 100 meters. There are target sockets at each of these ranges for sighting rifles prior to shooting the silhouettes. There are also six concrete bench rest tables for use in sighting in firearms and for more formal bench rest matches. There is a sea-land shipping container that has been modified for use as a storage building. A one bedroom mobile home is used for storage and a classroom.
The SDGC owns a number of .22 Rimfire target rifles and M1 Garand 30-06 rifles for use of our members and guests during activities on the range. The club also has spotting scopes, shooting gloves, shooting mats, bench rest stands and sandbags, hearing and eye protection and experienced shooters to help new shooters learn to improve their shooting skills.
There are numerous opportunities to participate in organized matches on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month and during the open range periods on all other Saturdays.
